2004 Grand Final Report - (Seniors)

The 2004 NTFL grand final saw a contest played between an-up coming Devonport team against the tried and proven Burnie Dockers.
In a build up to the Grand Final, the Devonport team had defied all the critics by playing a simple brand of football with the never say die approach, whilst the Dockers had taken on and defeated the side that all the "so" called football experts thought were there biggest threat  Launceston comprehensively in the 2 nd semi-final.

The first quarter saw a standard of football played by Burnie, which the Brisbane Lions would be proud of. It was simply awesome with 15 shots on goal (7.8) at quarter time to 1 goal, 3 behinds. In the 2 nd quarter it was much the same as the first with the Dockers piling another 5 goals on the board to 1 goal and the game was clearly over at halftime.

In the 2 nd half things didn't really improve with the Magpies managing to kick 5 goals to Burnie's 11 goals, which saw the Dockers run out winners by a massive 107 points. It was pretty hard to mention best players for Burnie as all 21 contributed in a magnificent team performance.

The Wilfred Barker Medal for the Best on Ground award was taken out by goal-sneak / utility Jason Howard. N.T.F.L leading goal kicker Andrew Hering finished off the year with another great performance by kicking 4 goals as did Jason Howard.

Club best 1 st year player - Nigel White topped off a great year kicking 3 goals to finish with 51 goals for the season, Brent Archer topped of a great comeback kicking 2 goals and the veteran of the side Errol Bourn chipped in with 2 goals in what proved to be his last game of football.

After the game Nick Probert (Playing Coach) announced that he was stepping down from his role as playing coach and club champion and favourite son Errol Bourn also announced his time as a player had come to an end.

2004 Grand Final Report - (Reserves)

Due to the NTFL in all it's wisdom deciding to play the under 19's as the curtain raiser to the senior grand final the reserves had to kick the dew of the ground at the early time of  9:50am. The reserves faced a tough South Launceston outfit (which had defeated the Dockers two weeks before by 13 points at York Park); the bulldogs had also dropped a number of senior players back after their senior side was knocked out of the finals race.

The Dockers however had gained the services Ben Hayes and Ben Britton who were the unlucky players that just missed out on senior selection.

The day started off well with the Dockers getting the first scores on the board thanks two points from Nick Stanley and Adam Colgrave and goal to Nathan Ling. The bulldogs bounced back however and banged on a couple of their own and after what was a seesaw first quarter the Dockers trailed by 13 points at quarter time. Coach Errol Bourn urged his players to make better use of their opportunities in the next quarter and that's exactly what they did.

Within the first 10 seconds of the 2nd quarter the Dockers had goaled after a monster punch from Grant Bramich landed in the arms of Ben Britton at center half forward who shot off a handball to Kurt Young who then goaled from 40 meters out. If that wasn't enough the Dockers again got the ball straight out of the center in exactly the same fashion as the first with Ben Britton this time kicking to Travis Hudson on the lead, Hudson goaled and the Dockers were now only 1 point down with only 2 minutes gone in the second quarter. The rest of the second quarter was again very close with both teams scoring multiple goals (though the Dockers again had more of the play but missed a few opportunities that could of really made their mark on the game). The Dockers went in again trailing but this time by only 3 points.

The second half was a different story,

Burnie again looked good early and at the 10 minute mark blew their opponents out of the water. The Dockers scored 6 goals to 1 in the remainder of the 3 rd quarter with Nick Stanley kicking two Nick Good, Travis Hudson Nathan Ling and Ben Britton also kicking 1 a piece. The dockers went in at 3 quarter time 36 points in front. From here the game never looked in doubt as Burnie scored the first goals of the last quarter through Rowan Summers and Chris Temby. South also scored 3 goals in the last but it was far two late with the Dockers Running away with the Game and the 2004 Premiership by 29 Points.

Ben Britton was named the best on the ground and was a dominant force for the Dockers at center half forward. Other great performances from Nick Stanley, Kurt Young, Nick Good, Ben Hayes, Travis Brown and Grant Bramich Showed the reason why the Dockers are so dominant in all 3 grades and why some say (the reserves) would beat or at least challenge most other NTFL senior sides.
